HURRICANE WATCH: FLORIDA’S GULF COAST; THEN EAST COAST OF USA TO NYC

The National Hurricane Center has declared a Hurricane watch for much of Florida’s Gulf Coast, with the storm predicted to then head northeast along the US eastern seaboard toward New York City next week!

The forecast map shows the projected path.  What it fails to show is that once the storm goes back out over water, it will be in the gulf stream, which can re-energize it back into a major hurricane as it heads along the east coast.

Persons in Florida should begin making preparations IMMEDIATELY for strong winds, heavy rain, loss of power and flooding.  Make certain you have:

1) spare food and water for MINIMUM of three days for each person in your home.  

2) spare batteries for flashlights and portable radios so you can see and keep abreast of news and official information.

3) Folks with propane gas grills may want to have the fuel tanks re-filled.  Those with charcoal grills may want to grab an extra bag or two of charcoal and cans of lighter fluid for cooking.  

4) FUEL-UP YOUR VEHICLES and keep them topped-off in case evacuation becomes necessary.  DO NOT WAIT until the storm hits to try to get fuel.  You may find yourself faced with gasstations that are empty or without power; leaving you stranded in a danger zone.

Above are the bare minimum preparations you should be making right now.  Longer term preps also include:

a) Those who take certain medicines to live should get an additional supply to last for a couple weeks in case supply chains are disrupted.

b) Folks ought to have a supply of canned meats, canned vegetables, powdered milk, 50 lb bags of rice, beans etc.,  to survive for several weeks if supply chains are disrupted.
