New Skills You Could Learn This Year
We are well into the year now, and many people are already starting to flag on their self improvement resolutions. The novelty of the diets and exercise routines has begun to wane, and all those other good new habits are also starting to lose their appeal in terms of the effort it takes to keep them up.
Hence, rather than a resolution you have to work at every day, why not choose some new skills to work on throughout, with a view to being fairly good by Christmas? This can make you feel like you are making positive, productive changes without having to adopt a difficult new daily routine.
Here are some skills you could consider:
Cooking
Whatever your current level of ability in the kitchen, cooking skills are fun to learn and useful to have. If you are already fairly competent then you could choose a specialist technique, such as becoming extremely good at baking, or choose a foreign food style you love and focus on perfecting it, for example Indian, Japanese or Mexican. If you have virtually no cooking skills beyond throwing processed food in the microwave or mixing things with boiling water, you can learn to cook meals from scratch and at the same time save money and improve your nutrition.
Sewing
Being able to make your own clothes, and clothes for your kids, can be a great way to save money and ensure you always get a perfect fit. If you get really good, you can even come up with your own designs and wear one off, unique pieces nobody else will have! Investing in a sewing machine and some fabrics that are easy to work with, like cotton, jersey and fleece fabric, will set you up to begin learning, and there are lots of sites and videos that will help you progress.
Languages
Learning a foreign language can be interesting and rewarding, and can also open up new opportunities for you. With online resources and apps to help you, you don’t even need to invest in lessons to start studying any language you like, from useful European languages like Spanish and French through to exotic options like Japanese or Arabic. Whether you want to take it all the way to fluency or just be able to grasp the basics, you can make a lot of progress in a year!
These are just three things you could aim to get better at or start learning, and they will all give you skills you will be glad of having in the future. Whether you are impressing your friends with a beautiful home cooked meal or booking a trip to a new country to try out your new found language skills, these are skills that can enrich your life.
