What Preppers Learned From This...

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One of the sites I check regularly is a prepper site run by a woman (and whose fanbase is largely female). Most prepper sites are too much tanked up testosterone yah-yahs, and that can get tedious after a while! Women preppers, by contrast, tend to look at the larger picture and include taking care of their families, friends and neighbors more than men do.

This “SHTF” (shit-hits-the-fan) drill, however, has allowed for some very real trials of what we think we know and what we discovered we didn’t get very well at all. It makes for interesting reading. My favorite tip was about buying shock treatment for pools. It’s concentrated chlorine, and it keeps longer than liquid bleach!

I’ll answer the questions for myself here as well.

1. What Did You Learn About Preparedness During the Lockdown?

I was grateful I listened to my intuition or ‘gut’ more than the media! I realized, however, that I need to convey my thoughts & feelings on this much sooner to my roomie, who is also my ride to get supplies! I dreaded trying to convince her, but she was actually waiting for my feedback before jumping on things. Now I know she’ll listen, I just need to speak up sooner!

Also, I discovered that I am not immune to “normalcy bias” — which is where you doubt your intuition in favor of believing that normal is still in place or will return very shortly. I’ve been mentally prepping since my teens and so I was surprised at how I had to battle that part of my mind!

I DID think to get personal toiletries, home care for sickness, and plenty of snacks and easy-to-prepare food. I read other people’s accounts of what they missed when they couldn’t get to a store, and jumped on those items quickly and stocked up well before it was an issue.

Mostly, I was grateful that we were so well positioned to ride out the first lockdown! I wouldn’t have been this well off in other periods of my life, and I never took this good fortune for granted. I still don’t.

Lastly (for question #1), we started donating extra eggs to a local Native American Reservation, which is something I would never have thought of before, either, but now I’ll keep it in mind going forward.

2. What Are Some Holes You Found in Your Preps?

I’m not much into cooking, so I barely used most of our canned or dried goods! It’s still good to have them, as they keep well, but frozen food stock-ups are really where I need to make sure I’m good. We have additional freezers up and running now, and so this will be possible going forward. That was honestly my biggest mistake, but we addressed it pretty quickly once I realized what I was going through the fastest.

PPE-wise, we had gloves and cleaning supplies a-plenty when everyone else was running out, but other than some leftover N95s from a smoky summer, I didn’t have varied masks for varied needs! Simple cloth masks for outdoors around people and cloth masks with filters for indoor shopping were needed and it took a while to get these. I’ll never forget to have them on hand again!

That’s it. We really were pretty well covered all the way around otherwise.

3. What Will You Do Differently for Any Further Lockdowns (Due to Covid-19)?

EXERCISE MORE! My indoor exercising has always been dancing, and my iPod crashed! So I need to replace that so I can keep more fit on my non-fatigue days. I really need to buy a new iPod before the next lockdown, which means I have to do it SOON.

4. How Will You Change Your Preparedness in General?

Big-picture wise, we need to get a new mobile home on the property (for sister or renters) and get gardens and a large greenhouse going. Access to fresh fruits and veggies is crucial, as is alternative means of income– and help for driving and labor. Also, I want to find an organization to join, like a church or club, that will allow us access to more people who could help us when times get rough.

All in all, I think we did amazingly well. We’re nearly done on re-stocking up again to prepare for the next lockdown (it’s coming!) and I’ve mostly fixed the few things I missed!
