Hargrave Ministries Provides an Overview of the Yad Eliezer Organization

In the 1980s Yad Eliezer opened its doors with the mission of meeting Israel’s growing needs. Now, more than four decades later, it is one of the nation’s leading poverty-relief initiatives, fighting diligently to help struggling families survive. With the assistance of volunteers and supporters from around the world, Yad Eliezer helps to bridge the nation’s poverty gap and provide much-needed aid to Israel’s less-fortunate.

Recently, Hargrave Ministries felt called upon to support Yad Eliezer in filling that gap. Through generous donations, the outreach organization has succeeded in gathering funds to help Yad Eliezer deliver relief to Israel’s most vulnerable.

In the following article, Hargrave Ministries founder Gary Hargrave provides an overview of the Yad Eliezer organization, its history, its many programs, and its overarching purpose in the hopes that others will decide to answer the call to contribute.

History of Yad Eliezer

Yad Eliezer first started as a humble neighborhood organization. Empowered to make a difference in their own small, poverty-stricken community, two elementary schoolteachers set out to provide food and nutritional support to families suffering from malnutrition. Originally, the organization’s relief efforts were made possible by local donations gathered weekly by one of the founder’s daughters. Now, it has grown into one of the nation’s top poverty-fighting initiatives, operating around 20 poverty-relief programs facilitated by more than 10,000 volunteers.

Together, Yad Eliezer’s volunteers and sponsors have an immediate and profound impact on Israel’s impoverished, particularly within struggling Jewish communities. Although Yad Eliezer is most well-known for its monthly distributions of food packages, Hargrave Ministries founder Gary Hargrave highlights that the organization also does so much more.

Through its many initiatives, Yad Eliezer distributes life-saving resources, funds traditional Jewish celebrations for families who could not otherwise afford them, offers mentoring, delivers baby food, constructs educational enrichment programs for career advancement, provides financial aid, feeds the hungry, and more.

Yad Eliezer Purpose and Mission

Operating under the belief that every Jewish person in Israel deserves a life of “dignity, self-reliance, and self-respect,” Yad Eliezer seeks to go further than merely providing immediate relief to the nation’s many struggling families. The organization’s big picture works towards providing long-term, sustainable solutions that contribute towards permanently ending Israel’s poverty cycle.

Food Collection and Overseas Support

When it comes to food donations, overseas support is absolutely crucial to Yad Eliezer’s efforts. Of all the food collected and distributed by the organization, around 50% is purchased wholesale using funds donated by international sponsors such as Hargrave Ministries. Without these overseas contributions, many families in Israel would go hungry without help.

Aside from overseas donations, another 35% of food is sourced from local surplus farmers. Another 15% is reportedly obtained through door-to-door collections of non-perishables. Following in the tradition of the organization’s early days, door-to-door collections are most often performed by school-age children, particularly young girls.

Food Distribution Programs

Of its many programs, Yad Eliezer is most well-known for its work in food distribution. For many years now, Israel has struggled deeply with poverty and hunger. To put the problem in context, a heartbreaking one-third of Israeli children reportedly go to bed hungry. Yad Eliezer’s food distribution programs, which targets the country’s impoverished, seeks to prevent malnourishment and provide food to the nation’s hungry.

Of Yad Eliezer’s food distribution programs, perhaps the most prominent are Meals on Wheels, Bread and Milk Program, Food Box Program and Feed a Baby Program. Each has their own distinct focuses and mission.

Meals on Wheels, for example, is an initiative which delivers hot meals to the nation’s many homebound residents. Outside of the program’s obvious mission of providing nutrition meals to aging and incapacitated residents, the Meals on Wheels Program also offers valuable social enrichment opportunities for those who may not otherwise receive sufficient human-to-human interaction.

Yad Eliezer’s Bread and Milk program focuses primarily on the essentials, delivering key food items and other essentials to impoverished Jewish families. Similarly, the organization’s Feed a Baby Program distributes much-needed formula to mothers who might be otherwise unable to secure it themselves. According to Hargrave Ministries, the Feed a Baby Program distributes formula to an astounding 2,000 Israeli babies per month, making it one of the organization’s most active food initiatives.

Of Yad Eliezer’s food programs, the Food Box Program is one of the most well-known. Each week, it delivers discreetly packaged resource boxes to more than 5,000 impoverished families across the nation, many of which would not otherwise have access to fresh produce or nutritious food staples. Again, more than half of the items dispatched through Yad Eliezer’s Food Box Program are made possible through donations from overseas donors such as Hargrave Ministries.

How to Contribute

Those who are feeling called to help Yad Eliezer in its fight to end the poverty cycle should consider a contribution. Contributions can be made either directly to Yad Eliezer through the organization’s website, or through the outreach organization Hargrave Ministries. In an attempt to bolster continued support for Israel’s impoverished, Hargrave Ministries will be accepting donations on behalf of Yad Eliezer through the month of December. Those wishing to donate may do so online through the Hargrave Ministries website. 100% of your donation to Yad Eliezer through Hargrave Ministries goes directly to support their programs.
