Wildfire Readiness for Households

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Most houses lost to wildfire are lost to embers landing on them, often well ahead of the fire itself. That single fact reorders the whole list.

What actually destroys houses in a wildfire?

Embers. They travel ahead of the front, land in gutters, on decks and against foundations, and start small fires that nobody is there to put out.

Fourteen seasons on a crew taught me that the dramatic image, a wall of flame arriving at a wall of house, is not the usual mechanism. What we saw far more often was a street where most houses were standing and a few were gone, and the difference between them was almost always the five feet closest to the building. Pine needles in a gutter. A woodpile against a wall. A doormat under an eave.

It is a slower and less cinematic threat than people imagine, which is why it is also addressable by ordinary householders with a rake.

The zones that matter, in order

The first five feet does more than the next twenty five. Start there and work outwards.

  • Zero to five feet. Nothing flammable against the house. No mulch, no woodpile, no stacked furniture, no plants under windows. Gravel or bare ground.
  • Five to thirty feet. The fire-resistant zone that Ready.gov asks for: leaves, debris and flammable material cleared, tree branches trimmed up and apart.
  • Gutters and roof. Cleared, twice a year, because a gutter full of needles is a purpose built ember trap.
  • Under the deck. The place everybody forgets and the place embers collect. Screen it or clear it.

Expert note from Abel Cortines, tools and edge care editor

Walk your own house on a windy afternoon and look at where the leaves pile up. That is exactly where the embers will collect, and the wind has just shown you for free. Fix those three or four spots and you have done most of the useful work.

What should be ready before a season starts?

The clearing, the go decision and the smoke plan. All three are done in advance or not at all.

Preparation When to do it Time it takes What it prevents
Clear the first five feet Before the season, then monthly An hour, then twenty minutes The most common way a house is lost
Clear gutters and roof Twice a year Two hours Ember ignition on the structure
Thin and limb trees to thirty feet Once, then annually A weekend initially Fire climbing into the canopy near the house
Agree the go trigger Before the season One conversation The hesitation that traps people
Store N95 masks Before the season Ten minutes Days of smoke exposure with nothing to wear
Photograph the house inside and out Once a year Twenty minutes A year of arguing with an adjuster
Ordered by return on effort rather than by cost. The first row is free and does more than everything below it combined.

There is a genuine trade in the thinning work. Removing vegetation near a house costs shade, privacy and in some cases the reason people bought the property. That is a real loss and it is worth naming rather than pretending the decision is obvious. The compromise most households land on is aggressive clearing in the first five feet, where the benefit is largest, and selective thinning beyond it.

Deciding to go, early

Set the trigger before the season and make it something observable, not a feeling.

  1. Agree in advance what makes you leave: an evacuation warning, not an order, or smoke you can see from the property.
  2. Decide who takes which vehicle, which animals go with whom, and what the meeting point is.
  3. Pack the vehicle when the warning is issued rather than when the order is, because packing is what takes the time.
  4. Leave while the road is still two way. Late departures meet incoming fire apparatus on single track roads, and that is how people get trapped.

The households I saw come out of it well were, without exception, the ones who left on a warning and felt slightly foolish about it. The ones who waited for certainty were making a decision about a road they could no longer see the far end of.

Expert note from Renata Sowell, water and evacuation editor

Photograph every room and the outside of the house once a year and store it off site. Fire claims turn on proving what you owned, and after a total loss there is nothing left to prove it with. It takes twenty minutes and it is the highest value twenty minutes in this entire guide.

What about the smoke?

Smoke arrives days before and lingers days after, and affects far more households than the fire itself.

  • N95 masks, stored before the season. Cloth and surgical masks do essentially nothing for smoke particulate.
  • One room with the windows shut and a filter running, chosen in advance, is more achievable than sealing a whole house.
  • Reduce what you generate indoors. Frying, candles and vacuuming all add particulate to air that is already loaded.

Where to go and how to get there is covered in choosing a place to go before you need one, and what to carry is in the case for a go bag against a stay put bin.
