Shen Yun is ‘Outstanding’

BERLIN, Germany—Ms. Yvonne Hammerschmidt, a civil servant, Ms. Handan Bozpina, manager at a shopping center, and another friend, all attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the International Congress Centre (ICC) in Berlin, on Friday, March 16.

The New York-based dance company seeks to revive the 5,000-year-old traditions of China and show the “the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture,” it says on its website.

“It was a wonderful show. The costumes were beautiful,” Ms. Hammerschmidt said.

One of the features that strikes audience members most is Shen Yun’s colorful costumes, which the company says are hand-sewn and incorporate vivid colors and elegant details.

“It was fascinating. The dance, without needing words, expressed clearly the reason for the dance. One only needed to watch and one understood what the dancers wanted to portray. This was absolutely the best,” she added.

Classical Chinese dance is at the heart of every Shen Yun performance and is a system of dance that is nearly as old as China’s civilization itself, the company says. Although mastering the dance requires extensive training and athleticism, it is able to convey the innermost thoughts and virtues of each performer.

“It was very interesting to learn about China through this performance,” she said.

Ms. Bozpinar, who was seeing Shen Yun for the third time, said, “The show was outstanding, the colors very colorful and the stories were very well presented.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company will next perform in Zurich, Switzerland from March 23-25.
