Dance Professor: Admires Shen Yun Costumes

TAICHUNG, Taiwan—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performed at JhungShan Auditorium, Taichung, on March 29 to a sold out audience. Shen Yun fans had invited their friends and relatives to see the performance.

Luo Tingyi, director of the Office of Physical Education, Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology, attended with five friends. Having seen Shen Yun a number of times, she said, “Shen Yun brings me refreshing feelings every year. I feel great!”

As an associate professor and the director of the OPE, Ms. Luo also teaches dance. She is especially attracted to the dazzling, hand-made costumes, which span China’s dynasties, regions, and ethnic groups. She said that the exquisite and ingenious design of the costumes is one of the main reasons she returns to see Shen Yun every year.

“[The costumes] were fantastic. They were so great! I love to see the performance every year because I love to see the costumes. They were very bright. The colors matched harmoniously and were very beautiful.” Ms. Luo said.

Using as an example one of her favorite programs, Sleeves of Silk, in which the sleeves of the costumes act as extensions of a dancer’s arms, and linger in the air long after a movement is finished, she said, “When the performers were dancing with the long sleeves, they looked elegant and graceful. They were so beautiful!” She said. “I really admire the designer of the costumes.”

According to the company’s website, Shen Yun presents the deeper spiritual core of the ancient Chinese culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity, as well as a reverence for the gods and the heavens, something Ms. Luo appreciated.

She was especially moved by the program The Dafa Practitioner’s Magical Encounter, which inspired her to realize that as long as people are benevolent, they will get help from the divine. “The program where the heavenly beings rescued the Dafa practitioner conveyed a kind of righteous faith and righteous thoughts,” she said.

Ms. Luo was also impressed by the lyrics sung by the solo vocalists. “[The lyrics] moved people. They could touch the deepest core of a person’s heart,” she said. “Especially the lyrics that say most people are busy with their lives seeking fame and money. So why are we busy our whole lives for this? What’s the meaning of life? How many people really think about this question?”

Ms. Luo had invited five friends to join her to see Shen Yun this year. “I love the performance, which I feel is full of energy and power. So I keep telling people to ‘go and see Shen Yun, go and see Shen Yun’!” Everyone who had come with her said the show was fantastic. She said, “So I hope that I can influence more people to see Shen Yun!”

Luo Tingyi, earned a doctorate in educational leadership at Montana State University, U.S., and is currently the director and associate professor of the Office of Physical Education, Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Ms. Luo excels in karate, badminton, and aerobics and has won championships in many karate and badminton tournaments in the U.S.
