Possible Proof Of New Dimensions Thanks To A Couple Of Speeding Neutrinos
The news on September 23rd of the little subatomic particles that could have traveled faster than the known speed limit in the universe has run amok our trusted notions of physics leading many to throw out the textbooks.
The speed of light is the fastest known way to travel, thanks to Einstein’s special theory of relativity but when CERN in Geneva sent the muon neutrino to the OPERA lab near L’Aquila Italy, they kept noticing tiny, nanosecond time differences.
This began three years ago, with researchers immediately attributing the results to human error. After considering their options, testing, retesting and scratching their heads in wonder, scientists can no longer deny that this has moved beyond anomaly and straight into scientific discovery.
“Most physicists still expect some sort of experimental error to crop up and explain the anomaly, mainly because it contravenes the incredibly successful law of special relativity which holds that the speed of light is a constant that no object can exceed. The theory also leads to the famous equation E = mc2,” said Lisa Grossman, writer for New Scientist.
Some scientists now argue that although this may look bad for Einstein, it might not mean the end of his tried and tested theory, more of an expansion.
The particles may have found another dimension to skip through, an idea that can lead to real evidence of string theory, multiple dimensions maybe even time travel.
Testing is ongoing with labs around the globe attempting to replicate the results.
