The European Southern Observatory has lined up a series of exciting activities for the Open House Day 2011, scheduled for 15 October, between 11:00 and 18:00 at its Headquarters in Garching bei München, Germany.

The highlights of this year’s programme include the building of a full-sized mock-up of the mirror of the planned European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) — the world’s biggest eye on the sky (weather conditions permitting). Visitors can also see real parts of the E-ELT, as well as experience animations and 3D walks through the telescope.

At an exhibition about the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) project, participants will be able to control a simulation of a transporter, a specially designed vehicle rugged and durable enough to transport ALMA antennas safely to the Chajnantor plateau at an altitude of 5000 metres.

In the Auditorium, visitors can attend talks by ESO astronomers, watch podcasts and talk live with astronomers at the Very Large Telescope, in Chile.

ESO has prepared several activities for children as well, including a planetarium show, face painting with astronomical motives and observations of the Sun if the sky is clear.

Tag der offenen Tür 2011: Programm

Die Europäische Südsternwarte hat eine Reihe von spannenden Aktionen für ihren Tag der offenen Tür 2011 zusammengestellt, der am 15. Oktober zwischen 11:00 und 18:00 am ESO-Hauptsitz in Garching bei München stattfindet.

Zu den Highlights des diesjährigen Programms gehört unter anderem der Bau eines Modells des Hauptspiegels des geplanten European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) in Originalgröße, das einmal das größte optische Teleskop der Welt sein wird (nur bei gutem Wetter). Die Besucher können außerdem Originalbauteile des E-ELT besichtigen und mithilfe von Animationen und virtuellen 3D-Rundgängen das Teleskop kennenlernen.

In einer Ausstellung über das Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) können Besucher   in einer Simulation einen der robusten Spezialtransporter bedienen, die die ALMA-Antennen sicher auf das   5000 Meter hoch gelegene  Chajnantor-Plateau transportieren.

Im Auditorium können die Besucher Vorträge von ESO-Astronomen hören, sich Podcasts ansehen und live  mit Astronomen am Very Large Telescope in Chile sprechen.

Die ESO hat außerdem mehrere Aktivitäten für Kinder vorbereitet, unter anderem eine Planetariumsshow, Schminken mit astronomischen Motiven und Sonnenbeobachtung bei klarem Himmel.
