NASA Releases Only 70% Quality Images To Public!
If anyone can answer why we only get to see 70 percent of quality of the original images I would love to hear it! I have always loved the MAHLI images when enhancing them and now I understand why. The 25 extra percent between 70 and 95 percent makes a major difference when you only have around 1000 X 1000 original pixels to work with! I would like to see all images that are labeled RAW IMAGES be an actual RAW IMAGE that has not had any of the quality cut in any shape or form. Maybe I am wrong here or making a big deal out of nothing but just a little FYI and something to take a look at! The http://www.fotoforensics.com is a neat website for a lot of uses!

Might have more to do with compression and quantity of data to transfer over the net, there is no doubt that research and selected educational users will get full raw access, but broadcast quality Jpeg is 1/10th the size of Raw so it is a no brainer to send this format out as the default web format as PR material in the public domain.

Why? If the images were 100% quality it would bog down their servers and the image quality would not be any better. It is what it is, the images show no more than 100% quality images and if you really want 100 % images increase their quality with software. You won’t get any better image.
Too the moronic comments … First RAW images are not compressed.. Second, Sure bandwidth is affected by image size.. a HD movie takes much more bandwidth than say, DVD quality.. and video is usually around 22 Frames per second (that is 22 individual images) .. Bandwidth is not a problem with posting… Even it they wanted easy downloads they could do what many sites do and offer different quality image (I.E. Any Background Image Site offers multiple quality of same image.) The European space agency for example release there images at near full quality.. What this guy is saying is Why does NASA state they are RAW(Full uncompressed image size) then actually give 70% quality… Makes no sense.. Many millions of images can be founf in much greater detail by simply searching HD backgrounds… there is no reason not to put full quality of images fro us the public to see.. it is our money funding these projects.
