NASA Spots an Earth-Sized World

In April 2018, NASA launched the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, aka TESS – a space telescope designed to search for exoplanets (planets located outside the solar system). Since its launch, TESS has managed to find plenty of exoplanets, but now is the first time the “planet hunter” discovered something resembling Earth in size.

The planet is called TOI 700 d, it is located about 101.5 light-years away from Earth and is a part of the Dorado constellation. Once the telescope discovered the large planet, the Spitzer – a space telescope that is planned to be retired soon – was able to confirm the planet is located in an area that allows for liquid water to appear on the surface.

According to additional findings published by NASA, TOI 700 d is about 20% larger than our planet, and it orbits the star TOI 700 every 37 days. While it seems the planet can support different life forms, TESS is not equipped to detect any signs of life. The James Webb Telescope, which is set to launch in March 2021, will be in charge of uncovering further details.
