Something that most people do not know and/or understand:

History of the Fed wire Services
The Federal Reserve Banks have been moving funds electronically since 1915. It was not until 1918, however, that the Federal Reserve Banks established a proprietary telecommunications system to process funds transfers. The system connected all 12 Reserve Banks, the Federal Reserve Board and the U.S. Treasury by telegraph. Treasury securities became transferable by telegraph in the 1920s.

Although in know it from working in government in the past it provides credibility other than just my word.

That means the Federal Reserve system has been doing commerce between their member banks and associates over the telecommunications lines since 1915.

The internet is also built on the telecommunications lines.

Now the average citizen has the ability to do commerce over the telecommunications lines just like the Federal Reserve has been doing since 1915.
This increases the speed of money transfer and turnover; thus increasing the fees the Federal reserve collects for the use of Fed wire services.

Explain?:
The aggregate of monies that is transferred on a daily basis throughout the economic system is eventually transferred through the Fed wire system because the banks reconcile the accounts pretty much on a regular daily basis now days.
It may take up to a few days for any specific payment made to someone to go through the system but they normally reconcile on a daily basis sometime during the early morning when telecommunications lines are less busy.
In other words; if you pay someone in California for a pair of shoes the money has to be transferred from your bank account to theirs thus the Federal Reserve’s secure Fed wire system is used to reconcile that by your bank sending the money from your account to the shoe seller’s account over the Fed wire system.
So, the more people use the telecommunications lines (over phone voice, or internet data) to do their transactions instead of sending a check, or paying cash, the faster the money moves and the faster it can be turned over, and the more fees the Federal Reserve can generate over the secure Fed wire banking system.

Interesting food for though on the entire idea that the new commerce system, built over the telecommunications lines, and the more or less coming to birth of the www in approximately 1993, is only out of the 1950′s ARPA (forerunner of DARPA) project and the 89 to 93 new developments of ways to transfer and display that data isn’t it.

Again; interesting food for thought huh?

Wonder who funded these developments/
Would be interesting to find out all the minutia of all the funding and all the impetus behind the push for these development, wouldn’t it?
