If anyone can be an energy healer, why do I need special attunements?

This article is created to address and clarify your questions regarding Reiki attunements and why they are necessary to become a Reiki practitioner. If you are reading this, I am certain that you are more than a little curious about Reiki. You may even be interested in becoming a practitioner. So here is a breakdown of the different levels of attunement.

Reiki Level 1

In this course, we cover the basics of Reiki. I teach the nature of the disease, basic chakra information, the hui yin technique, and how to conduct a session. This attunement is especially necessary and important in the Level 1 course because the Reiki Master/Teacher facilitates the opening of a “channel” through which life force energy enters and exits at the crown chakra of the practitioner. The channel acts as something akin to a straw where the life force energy can easily flow in and out of while a practitioner conducts healing on themselves or others. Yes! You can begin healing yourself and others with just a Level 1 attunement! After the attunement process is complete during the Reiki Level 1 course, I encourage my students to practice giving Reiki to each other. Afterward, they are welcome to share details about their experiences after giving and receiving Reiki.

It is a necessary requirement that a newly attuned practitioner practice Reiki on themselves for a minimum of 21 days after their first attunement. After this 21-day period, a new practitioner can begin practicing the healing techniques they have learned on others. Start with family members and friends before moving on to heal other members of your community. When treating your friends and family members, first ask them to be open to the healing process. Once you’ve completed a session, ask them about their experience. A practitioner should always ask for feedback from whomever they treat with Reiki because it can help to further their understanding of exactly how Reiki healing works on each individual person. Feedback will help the practitioner understand the connection with the energies of the healing they have just done, and it also allows the practitioner to see the connection between the healing and their own intuitive process during the healing sessions.

Reiki Level 2

This is where Reiki gets really interesting. By now you have been practicing a good amount of Reiki on yourself and others, and you have made the decision to progress to the next level. You are probably feeling like you don’t just want to progress, you need to! Congratulations! That is Reiki’s way of letting you know that it is time to continue on your path of evolution and growth.

At this time, you are probably noticing a lot of changes occurring in your life… Some may be positive, while others not so much. Level 1 Reiki attunement energy brings many changes to our lives because practicing Reiki regularly helps to bring you clarity of mind and peace to your soul. Within the new clarity and peace that is gained, you begin to recognize the areas of your life that need adjustment or total reorganization. Changes like these occur because, with Reiki, you are removing the dense energy that was once weighing you down and blocking your ability to make better choices. You begin to see all aspects of your life with more clarity. Not only do you begin to see things in a different light, you are encouraged to begin to make changes to your life that are more in alignment with Who You Are.

Back to the Level 2 attunement! During this course, we dive deeper into chakras: their meaning, their purpose, and other details relating to chakras as they relate to each aspect of the human body and our surroundings. We take a comprehensive look at the chakras in order to get a better understanding about them and how they work, specifically as it applies to the connection between our physical bodies and our energy bodies. But wait! We can’t cover chakras and not cover the auras, too! So, we will go over the auric fields and the purpose of each in this level also. Our auras and chakras work together along with the body’s meridian points which comprise our energy bodies.

Now for the really fun part. As you may know, there are several different styles of Reiki. Usui Shiki Ryoho is the style that I learned and teach in my courses. In the Level 2 course, I will teach you the three basic symbols of Usui Shiki Ryoho style of Reiki. We will cover the methods for symbol activation and where to apply them during a healing session. We will cover pronunciation, meaning, and purpose of each symbol. We will learn to draw them in the air and in the palms of your hands in order to activate a room and yourself prior to a healing session.

During the second attunement, you will receive these symbols from your Reiki Master/Teacher in the same way you were attuned for Level 1. Once you have been attuned with the symbols, you can now begin the practice of using these symbols during your own daily practice as well as in healing others. Another great thing about receiving the symbols is that you can now attune others to Level 1 and 2 Reiki. Of course, I would recommend practicing with the symbols during your own self-healing sessions before using them to treat others just to get the hang of it—so to speak. It is only when you receive your Level 3 Master/Teacher attunement that you can attune others to all three levels and teach as well.

Level 2 courses may also give you instructions on how to use other healing modalities in combination with Reiki. Why are these other healing modalities necessary, you may ask? They are not necessary to complete a Reiki healing session. Reiki heals all by itself without the need for any other modality o assist. Using other healing modalities in combination with Reiki is strictly a choice of each practitioner and are used to enhance the healing process and the resulting benefits.

Reiki Level 3 Master/Teacher

You made it! You have finally made the decision to take this learning all the way! During the Master/Teacher course, we will cover the essential information for creating a business out of your Reiki practice. A good way to start is by creating Reiki circles. There is a lot more material to cover in the Master/Teacher course, such as many more different healing techniques and many more symbols which are only used by Masters. At the end of the two-day course (yes, it takes two days), you will be attuned with the new symbols in the same manner as the preceding attunements.

Receiving each level of attunements in person from a Master/Teacher is, in my view, the best option when you are looking to learn Reiki. While there are many Master/Teacher practitioners that offer online attunements by using Distance Reiki, I believe there is something to be said for connecting with your Master/Teacher in person. My advice to someone looking for a Master/Teacher is: make sure the person you choose is someone you are comfortable with. If they are a yoga teacher, for example—as in the case of my own Master/Teacher—take one or two of their yoga classes and get a feel for their personality, etc. The decision to learn and possibly teach Reiki is an important decision in a person’s life, and you should feel comfortable with going to the Master/Teacher you have chosen with any questions you may have during your journey.
