Pagan Eye: Kabuki Cat-Witch at the Manga Exhibition
The figure with the pointy ears and claws facing a long-tongued demon is a cat-witch from Japanese folklore. The artwork was created as a kabuki theatre curtain in 1880 and shows actors portraying traditional monsters and ghosts from The Night Procession of the Hundred Demons. It is currently on display at the Manga exhibition at the British Museum, which I went to visit earlier this week.
The exhibition shows the origins of manga as well as displaying the various different types of manga that have developed – there’s a huge variety. In the centre of the exhibition is a library of manga books and benches where you can sit and read, so if you plan on going do leave yourself plenty of browsing time.
