What Happened to Shame?
By Candy Austin
Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary gives this definition: SHAME — A negative emotion caused by an awareness of wrongdoing, hurt ego, or guilt. In the Bible, the feeling of shame is normally caused by public exposure of one’s guilt (Genesis 2:25; 3:10). Shame may also be caused by a hurt reputation or embarrassment, whether or not this feeling is due to sin (Psalm 25:2-3; Proverbs 19:26; Romans 1:16).
Question of the last decade should be, “Whatever happened to Shame?!” It is obvious that society at large has lost the art of this much needed element. One just needs to look around at our Culture, flip on the News, get on the Internet, and listen to the Politics of our day to ascertain that there is ‘No Shame in their Game.’ In my honest opinion, it is like losing a type of ‘Virtue’ to overlook the ability to rightly discern one’s diabolical deeds and actions and how it greatly affects others!

Bible Study Tools Dictionary: “Shame”
Shame is a godly motivator. A virtuous life shames the ungodly, providing a context for evangelism (Titus 2:8 ; 1 Peter 3:16 ). A believer’s shame for past sin is a spur to forsake sinning ( Rom 6:21 ), to renounce disobedience ( 2 Thess 3:14 ), and to minister the gospel ( 2 Cor 4:2 ). The prospect of shame at Christ’s return is sometimes a necessary inducement to godliness ( Rev 3:18 ; 16:15 ). Paul uses the concept of shame most frequently with the immature Corinthian believers, urging them not to shame themselves (1 Cor 4:14, 6:5, 15:34 ; 2 Cor 9:4 ) or him ( 2 Cor 7:14, 10:8 ).
Shameless people flaunt their unholiness, calloused to God ( Zep 3:5 ) and glorying in their shame ( Php 3:19 ). Yet no one is shameless ultimately. “Shameless Acts” receive the judgment inherent in the act (Rom 1:27 ). Also, at the final judgment the nakedness of those not clothed with Christ’ righteousness will be exposed (Rev 3:18 ; 16:15 ). – Source
Just looking at our Prodigals, I ask myself that question… “Whatever happened to Shame?!” I imagine that many parents in this predicament think the same thing… that these children were not raised to grow up to be such ‘hardened and calloused’ individuals! One of the last things my youngest said to me about our wanting to meet her boyfriend was that, “That’s old-fashioned Ma; boyfriends meeting the parents is old-fashioned!” Shamefully, here we are almost 2 years since that conversation, and my husband and I are still waiting to be ‘important enough’ to meet our grown child’s significant other!
Turn on the TV and you will see celebrities and sports players refusing to stand for the National Anthem. Seriously?! Once again, whatever happened to Shame?! Politicians have no problem telling ‘Bold-Faced Lies’ on Public Television to propagate their nefarious narratives. Really?! Immodest and satanic women dancing on a pole, wearing barely anything at the Super Bowl Halftime Show… again, whatever happened to Shame?!
Not to mention the ‘alphabet people’ who are the LGBTQ+ community pushing to indoctrinate our kids into normalizing pedophilia… What?!?! Also, do not forget the Pro-Choice community ‘touting for infanticide’ by killing our babies in the womb. Totally on the spiritual altar of Molech?!?! The lack of Shame is just sickening to say the least!
All I know is that Paul tells us to examine ourselves daily to see if we are in the Faith. We need to rightly discern our thoughts, motives, and actions; and if there be any wicked way in us to confess it, give it to the Lord, and ask for help in repenting of it. Just like Pastor Andy Wood says, “The Christian Life isn’t Difficult… the Christian Life is Impossible!” The truth is we cannot do anything on our own, we need Jesus to help us every step of the way!
2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”
John 15:5 “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. A quote from Winston Churchill says, “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” My quote is something similar, “You have a sense of shame? Good. That means you have God’s moral compass in your life.”
Until next time… Maranatha!
(JESUS = WAY, TRUTH, LIFE)
