One hears a lot about diversity these days. I grew up in a “Leave It To Beaver” white world. There were no black people in my neighborhood or my grade school. In high school there were only a few black students and I went to public school. Growing up I never saw black people unless I visited my grandparents in the west end of Louisville. My grandparents lived at 32nd & Broadway. One of the best things that ever happened to me was being hired by Humana in the mid 80′s. I became part of a very diverse workforce. I began working with all kinds of people. We worked together, laughed together, ate together, and socialized together. Every day I was with black people, white people from other parts of town, Hispanic people, and gay and lesbian men and women. This diversity is one of the things I miss the most about working. My neighborhood is now more racially diverse and I’m fine with that. I knew life was changing when I was still working and I was often the minority in the room or on the elevator. By the time I left Humana old white dudes were getting few and far between. I was fine with that because many of the young people I worked with thought I was the coolest old guy they ever knew. They were correct.
