Authors On Their Own Writing: Logan Albright
I’ve interviewed pagan writer Logan Albright about which of his own books he most liked and why, continuing my mini interview series with authors.
Q: Of the books you’ve written, which is your favourite?
A: My latest book, Libertarian Paganism: Freedom and Responsibility in Nature-Based Spirituality, is probably my favorite.
Q: What is it about?
A: The book deals with the little-discussed overlap between the pagan and libertarian worldviews. As someone who spent a long time searching for a spiritual system that didn’t conflict with my ethics, I was delighted and amazed at how much emphasis contemporary paganism places on individualism, choice, personal freedom, nonconformity, responsibility, anti-authoritarianism, privacy, consent, and a number of other issues that are very important to me. I wanted to offer an invitation to people who are spiritual seekers unsatisfied with monotheistic religions, and also to those who feel disaffected by the tribalistic, right versus left politics of the 21st century.
Q: Why is it your favorite?
A: I like it because it’s personal, synthesizing the two guiding philosophies in my life in a way that I don’t think other writers have done before. I feel like we’re living in a time when a lot of people feel lost and disconnected from societal norms, and I’m hoping that this book will open up some possibilities to readers that they may not have realized existed. I’m also, as I get older, increasingly interested in bridge-building and facilitating communication between people who might otherwise think of themselves as enemies.
Q: Tell me more about yourself and any other books you’ve written.
A: I’ve been studying paganism, magic, and the occult for the last 15 years, and find a spiritual outlet through a Washington, DC-based pagan organization called The Firefly House. In addition to writing, I enjoy making music, producing documentary films, and wearing a handlebar moustache.
My last book, Conform or Be Cast Out: The (Literal) Demonization of Nonconformists, was a historical overview of the ways in which outsiders, loners, and free thinkers were attacked and persecuted as literally demonic. It contains some similar themes of living an independent life not dictated by the will of the majority, and a defense of those who don’t fit in. I’ve also written a book about the myth of the public servant called Our Servant, Our Masters: How Control Masquerades as Assistance, and a number of self-published novels.
You can find Logan Albright’s work on Amazon, from Moon Books, or his personal website.
