Pagan Eye: South London Gets a New Erection
I came back from holiday to discover my town has a new obelisk, but I have no idea why whoever designed it decided to put pairs of balls at the base of the tall pillar. I saw about it on a local social media group, so popped along to see it myself and photograph it.
The obelisk is on a plinth n Betts Park, Anerley, that’s stood empty for decades. There used to be a sundial there, which I remember from when I played in the park as a child.
Betts Park is all that remains of Penge and Anerley’s historic common land. Last summer I went on a tour run by local historian Alan Pottinger of the Friends of Betts Park.
