Cleveland Browns Release QB Seneca Wallace, May Still Use Colt McCoy as Trade Bait

Colt McCoy‘s time in Cleveland may not yet be over, but Seneca Wallace‘s time is.

The Browns released the nine-year veteran Friday afternoon as the team moves to get down to the 53-man roster limit.

Wallace served as the Browns’ primary backup over the past two seasons after being acquired from the Seattle Seahawks. Considered one of the league’s more solid backup options, Wallace started seven games for the Browns, passing for 1,261 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions.

Throughout the offseason, the general prediction was that the Browns would keep either Wallace or McCoy, but not both. Wallace’s $2.4 million base salary for the 2012 season likely made the decision a little easier.

However, it doesn’t appear that McCoy’s status as the primary backup to rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden is completely solidified either.

According to ESPN, the Browns may still field trade offers for the two-year veteran. One rumored scenario has Cleveland working a trade for St. Louis backup A.J. Feeley, though reports from the Plain-Dealer indicate that such a move is unlikely.

Things could certainly get interesting over the next 24 hours, as teams shuffle their rosters and continue to evaluate their depth options at the game’s most important position.

For now, it appears that McCoy is one step closer to getting his wish of remaining a Cleveland Brown, while Wallace’s presence on the open market should provide an option for at least one team in need of depth at the quarterback position.
