Cleveland Browns: Starting Colt McCoy Thursday Night Presents Win-Win Situation for Browns

Thaddeus Lewis, who has ties to Shurmur from their days with St. Louis Rams, is also in Browns camp and seems to have a good chance at being kept as a developmental third quarterback, making it likely either that Wallace or McCoy won’t be in Cleveland come this weekend.

The primary motive behind resting Weeden is to avoid injury this close to the start of the season, but there is an added bonus in starting McCoy on Thursday night. The rest of the NFL, specifically those teams in need of an upgrade at backup quarterback, will get an extended look at McCoy, who comes into the game with an impressive 119.1 passer rating through the preseason.

The Browns have been pretty open about the possibility of trading McCoy if a team is willing to meet their asking price. Could another solid performance from McCoy prompt a team like the Green Bay Packers, one of the teams most linked to trade rumors with the Browns, into offering a proposal to Cleveland’s liking?

The Browns organization isn’t typically known for making keen choices as far as quarterbacks go, but the decision to hold onto to McCoy through the preseason has put the Cleveland brass in a win-win situation.

They can deal McCoy for what will very likely be more than what they could have received for him prior to training camp, or they can keep him as their backup with the added confidence that McCoy has shown considerable development in his second year in the West Coast offense.
