Dallas Cowboys: Jason Witten's Health Heading in Right Direction, Value to Team is Irreplaceable

The immediate future of Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is very much unknown.

Witten suffered an injury to his spleen in the Cowboys first preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. Ever since then, his status has been up in the air. At first, many thought Witten would be done for the season but now, the tide may be turning in the other direction.

“Things are progressing. … It’s certainly starting to look (like surgery will not be needed),” Cowboys executive V.P. Stephen Jones told 105.4 The Zone in Dallas. “He’ll go back for another appointment next week and see where it sits.”

While Jones may not have been able to give a definitive answer as to when Witten will return to the lineup, improvement is all they can really ask for at this point. With Miles Austin battling injury and Dez Bryant being, well, Dez Bryant, the Cowboys will need Witten back as quickly as possible if they want to start the season with a bang.

The five-time All-Pro is quite possibly the most important player to the Cowboys’ offense, as his presence in the lineup opens so many doors for the rest of the skill players. Because Witten has become such a force in the middle of the field, the opposing defense must respect the short-to-medium range passing game, which will open the rest of the field for guys like Austin and Bryant to see more single-coverage.
On top of that, playing behind a suspect offensive line, Tony Romo is going to need Witten on the field to act as his security blanket should the line continue to show sieve-like tendencies. And let’s not forget Witten’s importance as a blocker in pass protection and the run game. So again, Witten’s value to this offense is irreplaceable.

Remember that the Cowboys open the season against the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants on Wednesday night, five days before the rest of the league kicks off, so to expect Witten on the field for Week 1 is probably too much to ask at this point.

But improvement is improvement and at the end of the day, that’s all the organization can hope for.
