Miami Dolphins: Pat Devlin Receives Tony Romo Comparison, High Praise All Around

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be the team’s starting quarterback when the season begins, but the backup role hasn’t been cemented yet.
While Matt Moore is the favorite for the spot at this point, the former No. 4 on the depth chart, Pat Devlin, has been making some waves. Devlin inched up in the rotation after David Garrard went down with a knee injury two weeks ago.
Devlin completed 22-of-37 passes for 183 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Dolphins two preseason games. Those certainly aren’t starter’s numbers, but that hasn’t stopped the Dolphins coaching staff from saying great things about him.
In Tuesday’s episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks, head coach Joe Philbin was shown talking Devlin up during a team meeting and after a drill. Sure, that might not seem like much, mostly because we’re only seeing a glimpse into an NFL training camp, but praise is praise, especially for a No. 3 quarterback fighting for a roster spot.
“He reminds me of (Tony) Romo when Romo was just like him, before he got started,” Campbell said. “His awareness and all that stuff, some of his niftyness.”
Say what you will about Tony Romo; he is one of those guys who you either love or hate, obviously because he’s a Cowboy. But Romo is considered one of the Top 10 best in the league, and he entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois. Devlin signed with the Dolphins prior to the 2011 season after being undrafted out of the University of Delaware. Their stories are similar, too.
Now there’s no guarantee that Devlin will even make the roster; it really just depends on what Philbin and general manager Jeff Ireland decide to do with Garrard. Either way, Devlin has gotten some air time, and that might help get him a job somewhere if he ends up on the cutting room floor.
