Oakland Raiders: Chemistry Between QB Terrelle Pryor and WR Juron Criner Worth Getting Excited About

Oakland Raiders backup quarterback Terrelle Pryor and wide receiver Juron Criner gave the fans in the East Bay plenty of reason to stand and cheer in Saturday’s 31-20 win over the Detroit Lions.

The relationship between a quarterback and a receiver is one that typically takes time to foster. By the looks of the two touchdowns the duo combined for, it would seem Pryor and Criner have invested a bit of time together.

The question is, will they get to make arrangements for any more quality time on the field together?

“I’m just so happy for him,” said Raiders head coach Dennis Allen of Pryor following the game. “He works so hard and puts so much time in. To have the big plays that he made with his feet and the big throws that he made and the guys step up for him like Juron did; guys have so much confidence in him and I’m just happy for him. Proud of him.”

A finger injury to backup quarterback Matt Leinart afford Pryor an opportunity to show that all the hard work is paying off.

“I felt real comfortable because when I was with the [third team unit] I would get like 10 plays in practice,” said Pryor. “That’s not really enough for me that I can really get the feel for it.

“They say that you win games in practice, and I wasn’t winning in practice with 10 plays, it’s impossible. I’m not really getting the feel for the exact plays that I’m going to be running whereas this week I kind of did. I was good to get [a few] extra reps behind [starting quarterback] Carson [Palmer]. It was great.”

Pryor finished his outing by completing three of five pass attempts for 137 yards and two touchdowns (both to Criner), and carrying the ball for 90 yards on five rushes with a 17-yard scamper into the end zone for a score. The connections with Criner were something worth seeing.

The Oakland wideout made a great play on a 39-yard TD pass in which he turned around enough to haul in the ball, which appeared to be underthrown, and make his way to the promised land for the six.

The chemistry the two have developed can be attributed to skill on both their parts, however the relationship between QB and receiver allows for the ability to make those difficult catches work out when they usually shouldn’t.

“It plays off each other,” said Criner. “If the DB’s are worried about turning around to try and tackle him he can easily just not pass the line of scrimmage and pop it over the top. So I feel like we are definitely going to be able to play off each other.”

Criner also hauled in a spectacular 76-yard touchdown pass from Pryor. If Saturday’s offering is a telling sign of the future, it doesn’t seem like that far of a reach to expect to see some packages featuring Pryor designed to capitalize on his big play ability. And Criner just might factor into those appearances as well.
