Pittsburgh Steelers: Wide Receiver Mike Wallace's Holdout Apparently Coming to an End

It appears wide receiver Mike Wallace is coming closer to ending his holdout with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

ESPN has reported that Wallace is expected to return by Week 1 of the regular season.

So, why wait Sir Wallace? Is Wallace taking a page out of the Allen Iverson book of “it’s just practice” or is he trying to merely “get paid,” as in a long-term deal with the likes of the top wideouts in the NFL?

Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor, who is a close friend to Wallace, was recently quoted saying, “I don’t know when he’s coming back. Just whenever he does come back, I want him to be in shape.”

This came a few days after a practice scuffle broke out between Taylor and wideout Antonio Brown, who recently signed an extension with the Steelers.

The players insist this was nothing to do with Wallace, but hey, who knows. Perhaps Taylor thought an extension of a fist to the face would help speed up negotiations for his friend Wallace.

With a new offense being installed this season, Wallace may have to show a higher level of ability to perform on pass routes over the middle and not just the fly routes he excels at with his breakaway speed. The games’ elite wide receivers can run more routes effectively and fight for the ball, showing a willingness to go over the middle– a consistency Wallace hasn’t shown the ability to do.

Not many of the NFL’s top wideouts have Wallace-like speed, however. For Wallace to get paid like an elite wide receiver he has to show he is an all-around receiver.

At this time, the star receiver is not worth the reported seven-to-eight million a year he is seeking; not with the Steelers having just extended Brown. Also, Emmanuel Sanders is finally healthy and ready to perhaps provide a breakout season.

More than likely the Steelers will use this season as an opportunity to showcase Wallace’s talents to the highest bidder after the season. Wallace should be able to bring in a first-round draft pick and possibly a mid-round selection as well.

The Steelers could then use these picks in filling holes on an aging defense that will need to be addressed for the upcoming years.
