Seattle Seahawks 'Ecstatic' About QB Russell Wilson who Looks More Veteran Than Rookie

The decision by the Seattle Seahawks to draft former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft appears to be paying off in spades.

After two solid halves of work, coming in the second halves of Seattle’s first two preseason games, Wilson has looked sharp, poised and in control in relief duty of starter Matt Flynn. In Seattle’s second preseason game of 2012, Wilson took authoritative command of the Seahawks second-team offense against the Denver Broncos by putting on a demonstration of field leadership, completing 10 of his 17 pass attempts for 155 yards and led the team to three touchdown scoring drives at Mile High.

“We’re ecstatic about him,” said Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll in his post-game press conference. “To have a guy coming off the bench like that and play two halves back to back [in reference to Wilson's strong play in both preseason games] and really play football, it’s great for our team.”

Wilson, who stands at 5’11″ and weighs in at about 210 pounds, has never shied away from stepping up in the pocket and proved his determination to play at a level consistent with what is expected at the pro level. On multiple plays he appeared quite calm and maintained the presence of mind to watch things develop, yet get rid of the ball when necessary.
His cool-headed decisions are far more reflective of a veteran signal-caller with a great deal of experience behind him more so than that of a wide-eyed rookie. It’s almost as if he belongs in the NFL, despite what his critics have proclaimed that he is too short to be an impact player. Did no one tell him that short guys can’t play quarterback?
Of course Wilson has been told that, many times, however winners typically don’t listen to the outside noise. Carroll couldn’t be more pleased by how his rookie quarterback performed in his recent outings against the Broncos and Tennessee Titans.
“The second half was so clean for us in all aspects. Russell did some good things again. He really continues to show that he has a great sense for getting out and not getting sacked, and he’s made some plays when he’s done that. And he’s throwing the ball well, so he’s doing really well.”
Carroll’s nod to Wilson’s ability to avoid sacks is certainly worth taking note of. Wilson made some great moves when he took the ball on tuck-and-run plays.
The rookie QB made a nice 11-yard dash on a 2nd-and-10 play for a first down in the third quarter, which set up a rushing touchdown three plays later for running back Kregg Lumpkin. Wilson would make some shifty moves to help maneuver his offense in to scoring position on multiple possessions.
It has been said that the proof is in the pudding. Well Jell-O, it might be worth considering offering this particular quarterback an endorsement deal because the kid knows his pudding.
