A little more than a year ago, former Boise State Broncos safety Jeron Johnson was dealing with the stress of not having been drafted and waiting out the NFL lockout to figure out where he was going to play his professional career. Once the lockout ended he found a home with the Seattle Seahawks, a team bursting with talent in the secondary.

Johnson made a name for himself as an integral cog in one of the most underrated college defenses in the country. His knickname, “Showoff” is quite fitting since he liked to deliver quite the show for highlight reels when it came to the hits he delivered on the blue turf in Boise. Johnson, who now moves into his second season in the pros, showed off once again by delivering the boom and making plays in the Seahawks recent 30-10 victory over the Denver Broncos.

“He did great,” Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said of Johnson in his postgame press conference. “You know he had the big hit and the forced fumble, then he gets the overthrow pick. That’s huge for two turnovers by a kid.”

“I had an opportunity to get in early and just tried to make plays,” Johnson said.

During his college career I was a sports reporter in Boise, Idaho and interviewed him on several occasions. Johnson speaks rather quietly in most of his interviews with a few rare moments when his boisterous personality comes through.

That behavior is much the same on the field, not unlike a shark. Under the surface things seem relatively calm and low-key, that is until the moment he chooses to make his presence known.

Such a moment came in the second quarter of the game against Denver when Johnson knocked the ball out of the hands of Broncos running back Lance Ball which linebacker Leroy Hill scooped up to give the ball over to the Seahawks in Denver territory.

“I just tried to take care of my gap and the blocker kind of fell off of me,” Johnson said. “I hit the running back and when I tackled him my hand already was on the ball. I just stripped it out and the ball came loose.”

Johnson capitalized on the preseason playing time once again when he found himself in just the right position to intercept Denver QB Peyton Manning‘s overthrown ball. The second-year safety returned the Manning mistake for 21 yards. Both of those plays set up scores for the Seahawks courtesy of two Steven Hauschka field goals.
Johnson’s lengthy time on the field came courtesy of Carroll’s decision to let Pro Bowl strong safety Kam Chancellor to rest up.
“Kam, he was a little bit hampered and we just thought it was a good time to… We didn’t have to overplay him. So he started the game, played the first couple of series and we got him out of there.”
The decision to play Johnson also allows the Seahawks coaching staff to further evaluate what level of play they might expect from Johnson since he is not alone in the talent pool the team is looking at.

“We have some good guys at safety that we want to see. We want to see Jeron, we want to see Winston Guy, and so we thought this would be a good opportunity to do that.”

The Seahawks drafted Guy, a former Kentucky Wildcats safety, in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He is also someone the coaches want to evaluate.
After making his case for getting more time on the field in the win over Denver, Boise State fans took to social media in droves. They posted comments on Facebook and Twitter about the high level of play they saw from one of their favorite Broncos players from the recent successful era at Boise State. They have seen Johnson make tackle after tackle and deliver the hits that you can hear pop throughout a stadium.
To see the young safety do the same thing at the pro level is exactly what the fans of his college career expected him to do. After all, he does have a penchant for showing off.
