New England Patriots: Acquisition of Greg Salas Just Another Example of Bill Belichick Always Being One Step Ahead

The New England Patriots acquired wide receiver Greg Salas on Saturday, sending a late round draft pick in 2015 to the St. Louis Rams.
Salas was a fourth round selection in 2011 for the Rams, and finished his rookie campaign with 27 receptions for 264 yards. The move just proves, once again, that head coach Bill Belichick is always one step ahead of everyone else.
Shortly after releasing 33-year old receiver Deion Branch, the Patriots acquired another shifty receiver who can play on the outside or in the slot, in Salas. He may not be the caliber of receiver Branch was in his prime, but New England got younger at the position with the 24-year old, as well as someone who has experience in their complicated offense.
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was Salas’ offensive coordinator in St. Louis last season, before returning to New England, after Bill O’Brien left the Patriots to take over head coaching duties at Penn State University.
This trade means a few things. Salas is familiar with McDaniels’ offense and should be able to contribute right out of the gate if called upon, McDaniels has a pretty good idea of what the former Hawaii Warrior’s strengths and weaknesses are and quarterback Tom Brady has yet another reliable target in his arsenal.
Salas could very likely be the third receiver in this offense behind Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd, that is, if he beats out the likes of Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater. At 6-1, 209 pounds, Salas has the size to play on the outside if needed but is a more natural fit playing the slot postion.
Where ever New England decides to play Salas, with his experience in the Patriots’ offense and the confidence of McDaniels behind him, he should become a regular contributor on one of the most productive units in the league.
