Fantasy Football Sleepers: Week 8

Fantasy Sleepers: Week 8

Just a reminder, it’s another rough bye week in the NFL. The Texans, Ravens, Bills and Bengals each have good to great fantasy football options and it will cause a large percentage of owners to be scrambling to the waiver wire or to their bench to make up for that key production.

If you’re one of the many owner missing key contributors, maybe these sleepers are sitting on your bench or are free agents that are worth a one week fill-in. Also be sure to check out our waiver wire pick-ups for the week and our Week 8 player rankings, which are continually being updated.

Sam Bradford (QB)- It’s always risky to consider starting a quarterback after the long flight to the U.K. Bradford has been a pretty mediocre option this year, ranking 22nd in terms of fantasy points scored. But this seems like the kind of week you might want to consider starting him if you have him. The New England Patriots have been horrible defending the pass, giving up an NFL-high 16 touchdowns through the air so far. Over the past five games, the Patriots have surrendered at least 293 yards passing in each contest- to the likes of Mark Sanchez, Joe Flacco, Ryan Fitzpatrick and even Russell Martin.

Andrew Luck (QB)-  Luck hasn’t had a ton of success through the air, tossing only seven touchdowns in six games. He has added 115 rushing yards and three TD runs to his stats, but Week 8 looks like the kind of game that the Colts will try to take to the air. Along with the Patriots, the Titans have surrendered an NFL-high 16 passing touchdowns this season. Tennessee’s opposing QB’s are also averaging a healthy 24.8 fantasy points-per-game.

Alex Green (RB)- The Packers offense is getting decimated by injuries, especially in the backfield. FB John Kuhn has been ruled out this week, meaning that Alex Green should continue to see a full workload. More importantly, with Kuhn out, Green is likely to stay on the filed should the Packers have any rushing opportunities near the goal line. Since taking over as Green Bay’s starter, Green has 20+ carries in each game, and Week 8 should be no different. The added bonus is that these 20+ carries come fantasy football’s 4th worst run defense, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rashad Jennings (RB)- Jennings was a hot commodity in August, when he was announced as the Week 1 starter after Maurice Jones-Drew‘s contract holdout. Jennings was then dropped in most league’s when he got hurt and missed a couple of games. Now MJD has suffered his own serious ailment and Jennings will return to the starting lineup, conceivably for the next several weeks. Jennings has shown the ability to be a productive, full-time player as evidenced by his rushing score and seven receptions off the bench last week. He has a very good chance at receiving 25+ touches this week against the Packers, making him an excellent flex play.
Josh Gordon (WR)- Maybe Mike Holmgren was on to something when he used a second round pick in the supplemental draft on the Baylor wide-out. Gordon has been red-hot, scoring in three straight, including four touchdowns in those three games. He also dropped what would have been a fifth touchdown when he lost sight of the ball in the sun last week. QB Brandon Weeden has started to look for Gordon downfield as Cleveland’s main weapon. Weeden targeted Gordon a season-high ten times last week and should be in-line for another big game in Week 8 as the Browns host a San Diego squad that is fantasy football’s fifth worst defense in terms if allowing fantasy points to wide receivers.

Brandon Gibson (WR)- Looking for a wide receiver you can pluck off of your waiver wire and plug in this week? Brandon Gibson could be your guy. As mentioned earlier, the New England secondary has just been pathetic this year and Gibson has started to quietly become a reliable fantasy producer, with 12 receptions and 151 yards in the Rams’ last two games. Gibson isn’t flashy, but he should be a safe bet to see a fair number of targets in London and can be easily picked up in 65% of fantasy leagues.

Eric Decker (WR)- Decker and teammates Demaryius Thomas and Willis McGahee are not traditional sleepers, but this is the week to put them into your lineup no matter who you have to bench. Denver’s Week 8 opponent, New Orleans, can’t stop anybody and the Broncos offense, led by Peyton Manning, is starting to round into shape. This has all the makings of being a high-scoring contest and squeezing Broncos players into your lineups seems like a good formula for fantasy success. Even both tight ends, Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen deserve consideration for Sunday Night Football.

Anthony Fasano (TE)- He’s definitely not a household name, but Anthony Fasano has been a steady producer. He’s averaging five targets a week and has caught two or more passes in each of Miami’s six games and has a couple of touchdown passes as well. This week, the Dolphins travel to New York to take on a Jets defense that ranks 29th in the league, giving up 10.9 fantasy points-per-game to tight ends.
