Dallas Cowboy Kills Teammate In DUI Accident Say Authorities, Police Charge Nose Tackle Josh Brent With Intoxication Manslaughter

CBS reports Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent has been arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter stemming from a late night crash that resulted in the death of a teammate.

CBS Station KTVT reports that Jerry Brown Jr., a 25-year old currently on the Cowboys’ practice roster, was killed in the accident.

On Saturday around 2:21 a.m., Brent was driving westbound on State Highway 114 when his vehicle hit a curb and flipped at least once before coming to rest in the middle of the service road.

According to a report released by Irving police, Brent was behind the wheel of a car at 2:21 a.m. when it hit a curb, causing the vehicle to flip at least once before coming to rest in the middle of a service road. When officers arrived on the scene, Brent was responsive and able to speak. Brown, 25, was unresponsive and transferred to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead according to  Dan Hanzus of the NFL.com

Officers suspected alcohol played a role in the accident and had Brent perform field sobriety tests. Brent was eventually taken into custody. The charges were altered when police learned Brown had died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

The Cowboys confirmed Brown’s death as the team prepared for Sunday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Team owner Jerry Jones released a statement of condolence:

For the first time since 1995, the Dallas Cowboys selected a player in the annual Supplemental Draft, taking Illinois’ Josh Brent in the seventh round in 2010. With his selection in the Supplemental Draft, Dallas forfeited its 2011 seventh round draft choice. Brent was counted on to contribute immediately in 2010 as part of the defensive line rotation at nose tackle. His size and good use of hands allowed him to see valuable playing time in all 16 games as the backup nose tackle to Pro Bowler Jay Ratliff. In his second pro season, Brent continued to hone his skills behind Ratliff and looks to continue his development this season.
