2013 NFL Draft Top 5 RB Prospects
- Marcus Lattimore HB SCAR – Knee injuries and all Marcus Lattimore holds the top slot on my running back list. When healthy Lattimore was a man amongst boys in the NCAA and his diversity on the field is unrivaled in this draft class. Even though his body only helped up for half of the season he totaled rushing TDs and 21 receptions. Backs that can carry the ball 250+ times and catch 50 passes are rare, Lattimore is a throw back to the 90′s style of back. Every time he runs it reminds me of a young Eddie George and he was easily the best player on an athletically talented South Carolina squad. I look at Willis McGahee bouncing back from major knee surgery and Micheal Bush bouncing back from his at Louisville to have productive careers and see how good Lattimore can still be after his injuries.
- Eddie Lacey HB ALA – Bama running backs have been up and down in the NFL as of late but I feel that Lacey is more Richardson than Ingram. He showed his strength and elusiveness against a Notre Dame defense that was top 5 in rush defense in the country. I also look at the fact that Lacey doesn’t have a ton of miles on his legs due to the split in carries at Bama. He has to have a sub 4.55 40 yard dash to keep this ranking above Giovanni Bernard.
- Giovani Bernard HB UNC – Bernard is considered the top back on almost every board and his speed/quickness combination is comparable to Giants 1st round pick David Wilson last season, but he ranks at 3 because of his lack of experience. He only played 2 seasons at UNC and didn’t have many meaningful games to showcase his dominance.
- Joseph Randle HB OKST – Randle was the unheralded part of those dynamic Oklahoma State offenses and at 6’1″ he should run in the top 3 40 yard dash times for the running back groups. Randle could be a perfect complimentary back for teams with older running backs like Seattle or Atlanta.
- Mike Gillislee HB UF – Gillislee showed an immense amount of heart this season at Florida. HE constantly fought through leg injuries and his production never dipped. When healthy he is a top 5 back in this class. This draft class is littered with character and health issues, so the players that show the heart to play through injuries are an added plus. Gillislee showed his workhorse capability and would flourish with a talented offensive line in front of him.
