Kaepernicking: The NFL’s Newest Tebowing

Colin Kaepernick is a rising superstar in the NFL. The man has gone from sheer nobody to talented athlete in a matter of months and now Mr. Kaepernick has his team in the biggest game of the year. After replacing Alex Smith in November, Kaepernick has taken the Niners to a whole new level of awesome, giving the city of San Francisco a football dynasty to believe in more than ever since Steve Young was the quarterback in the bay area. The playoffs were a time when Kaepernick really shined, running all over the Green Bay Packers and systematically passing all over the Atlanta Falcons, but it hasn’t been his gameplay that has taken the football world by storm…it’s now his signature trademark touchdown move, kissing his biceps in a fashionable and yet prideful manner as a sign of respect for the Niners man under center. Akin to popular Tebowing and even the short lived Bradying, Kaepernicking is now the new fad encapsulating the NFL, but the real question is what does this signature move really mean?

When Tim Tebow’s signature move of bending one knee after scoring a touchdown took the NFL world by force, Tebow was on top of the football world, leading the charging Denver Broncos into the last half of the 2011 season and to a playoff berth, starting with a stellar round one victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tebow’s move become an icon and symbol of pride for most NFL fans looking up to someone who stood for more than just the game itself. Heck, it even managed to garner its own definition: to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different. It now appears that Tebow’s move, as well as his NFL status has hit the skids as this once shining beacon is becoming more and more irrelevant these days. It would appear that Colin Kaepernick is the new now, he’s the new “it” man and his  stylish move is gaining popularity day by day.

Instragram, Twitter, and Facebook have become hot spots for people showing off their “Kaepernicking” move. But the real question is, how long is this new fad going to last? Tebow’s move died out the second he was headed for Broadway, and Tom Brady’s, “Bradying” was declared dead the minute the Patriots lost Super Bowl XLVI. So who’s to say how long Kaepernicking will stick around? My guess is as good as yours, but if the young gunslinger plays his cards right, and ends up leading his San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl victory, his move may not be the only thing analysts will be talking about for years to come.

Though Kaepernicking hasn’t made it’s way into the dictionary yet, it’s encapsulating the sports world by storm, so much so that it’s even spread to the hockey world. Last night, San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture celebrated his opening goal against the Edmonton Oilers by imitating the Niners quarterback, by kissing his bicep. It’s truly amazing to see how something as little as a scoring celebration can create such a ruckus in the sporting world. We can only imagine how much longer people will be obsessed with this new fad, but come Super Bowl Sunday, expect a lot of fans to be mimicking the sporting world’s newest and most popular move. Hopefully, down the line, we’ll be able to figure out the true definition of what it means to kiss your bicep.
