Dolphins reportedly ink rookie RB Mike Gillislee

According to Pro Football Talk, the Miami Dolphins have signed fifth-round running back Mike Gillislee to a four-year, $2.322 million deal that includes a $162,800 signing bonus.

The Dolphins have not officially announced this signing like they have done with the team’s other four draft picks who are under contract. But Miami coming to terms with Gillislee makes sense considering they have already signed fourth-round choices Dion Sims and Jelani Jenkins as well as kicker Caleb Sturgis who was also taken in the fifth round.

Gillislee impressed in rookie minicamp, but that trend needs to continue and sustain when the pads come on in July if he wants to seriously compete for carries in a backfield that features Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas. Miller appears to have the inside track for the starting job, but unseating Thomas as the Dolphins’ number two back would be a realistic goal for Gillislee in his rookie season.

Only third-round picks Dallas Thomas and Will Davis, second-round selection Jamar Taylor, and third-overall pick Dion Jordan remain unsigned for the Dolphins in their 2013 draft class.
