NY Giants Factoid of the Day: Last Game at Yankee Stadium

The New York Football Giants played their final game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, September 23, 1973 vs the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a sunny afternoon with a temperature of 72 degrees at kickoff. It would be their final day in the sun, so to speak, in the storied building they had called home since 1956.

The contest ended in a 23-23 tie, fitting for a Giants-Eagles game and even more fitting for a Giant team that was about to embark on three-year, three-state odyssey in which they would win only nine games.

In 1973, the Giants defeated the Houston Oilers, 34-14 in Week 1 at The Stadium. The Week Two tie with Philly would be the team’s swan song in the Bronx. They played their next five games that season at the Yale Bowl in New Haven. They finished the season at 2-11-1, going 0-7 on the road.

In 1974, the Blue played their entire home schedule in New Haven, dropping all seven games there. They would end up 2-12, with the only highlight being a 14-6 win in Week Three in Dallas.

1975 saw the Giants return to NYC. This time at windy, dusty, muddy Shea Stadium, which was only a decade old, but extremely fan unfriendly and already outdated. The Giants finished 5-9. The team moved to the Meadowlands in 1976, but did not post a winning season there until 1981.
