Week 10 NFL Picks Against the Spread (Woodhull)

Here are my Week 10 NFL picks against the spread:

Green Bay Packers +1.5 (over Philadelphia Eagles)

So the Eagles lit up the Raiders last week with Nick Foles throwing a record-tying seven TDs. In addition, the Packers lost their star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, to a broken collarbone last week. That brings us to this game, where it’s basically a pick’em game. Had it been played last week, however, a Packers-Eagles contest might have been a double-digit line.

Despite the impressive win last week, the Eagles biggest problem still exists in that they give up an NFL-worst 419.3 yards per game. For all the tricks that Chip Kelly has brought to the offensive side of the ball for Philadelphia, he hasn’t solved the basic problem of stopping the other team.

The Packers offense is deadly with Rodgers at the helm, but will still be workable if Seneca Wallace is able to replicate some of that offensive efficiency. This will close, but I suspect the Packers will still have enough to eke out a win.

San Francisco 49ers -6.5 (over Carolina Panthers)

Last week I picked the Falcons with the points against the surging Panthers team, and that didn’t work so well. My general thesis was the Panthers hadn’t beaten a quality team. The Panthers, in destroying the two-win Falcons, still haven’t overcome the thesis in that they only beat the bad teams. Additionally, the Panthers, have gotten national attention for their hot streak as winners of four straight.

There is also an equally impressive win streak going on the west coast with the host team in this matchup as the 49ers are now winners of five consecutive games. In lieu of recapping Carolina’s opponents, I’ll simply close with my same thoughts as last time: I’d like to see Panthers beat a good team first.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers +2.5 (over Miami Dolphins)

So it’s a question of whether all the off-field distractions have galvanized the Dolphins or dismantled their team. I’m voting on dismantled or at the very least dismantled their already below-average offensive line.

Functionally missing two starters from their line will reduce them to mostly turnstiles, but they resembled this already at times. Having already allowed a league-worst 35 sacks so far this season, any further depletion of talent will be catastrophic.

However bad the Bucs have been this year, their defense has been middle of the pack, and it has been the offense that has let them down. In a low-scoring contest, the Bucs finally get their first win of the season.
