Andrew McCutchen Traded, Chris Shaw called up

The San Francisco Giants have traded veteran All-Star and former National League Most Valuable Player Andrew McCutchen to the New York Yankees in-exchange for two minor league prospects before the Aug. 31 deadline.

McCutchen, 31, was acquired by the Giants in January to help bolster their offense, along with Evan Longoria from Tampa Bay. He hit .255 with 15 home runs and 55 runs batted in.

The Giants have acquired minor league infielder Abiatal Avelino and pitcher Juan De Paula, two prospects who should be near the middle of San Francisco’s pipeline of young talent in the farm.

This raises a large question mark for the Yankees, as regular right fielder Aaron Judge has been sidelined with a wrist fracture. The acquisition of McCutchen raises plenty of concern for Judge’s future this season in the Bronx.

Meanwhile, the Giants are calling up power hitting outfielder Chris Shaw from Triple-A Sacramento. The 24-year old was hitting .259 with 24 home runs and 65 runs batted in. Shaw, a first baseman by draft, moved to the outfield shortly after entering professional baseball. He is expected to split time in the outfield with Gorkys Hernandez, Gregor Blanco, Austin Slater, and Hunter Pence.

McCutchen is a pending free agent and it was an added bonus that the Giants got something back for him, oppose to letting him test the market and get nothing.
