San Francisco Giants Season Review and Offseason Plans

The San Francisco Giants were having big expectations coming into the 2018 MLB season. The team was coming back from a disappointing 2017 season where they finished in last place in the NL West division and last in the entire National League. They had their worst season in more than 30 years and changes are now needed quickly. The general manager of the team at the time Bobby Evans made two big acquisitions before the start of the 2018 MLB season by adding two all-star players via trades. The Giants first acquired third-baseman Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays in December 2017 and one month later, acquired outfielder Andrew McCutchen from the Pittsburgh Pirates on January 15, 2018. With these two-star players in the lineup, the Giants were supposed to be much better and to contend for a playoff spot in 2018. It’s really never happened, and the team finished with a disappointing record of 73 wins against 89 losses which was good for 4th place in the NL West. The team was in the race with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, and Arizona Diamondbacks until the beginning of September but won only 5 games in the last month of the season to miss the postseason games once again.

The Giants will need to be much better in 2019 and to improve the lineup during the winter. The team will first need to name a new general manager. In big SF Giants news, the team fired their GM Bobby Evans on September 24th and still haven’t announced a possible replacement. No matter who will be the new GM of this team, he will need to find a way to bring players with more power to the team. The Giants finished in the 2018 season among the worst teams when it comes to hitting home runs. The Giants were sure to have improved this area with players like Longoria and McCutchen but it didn’t work. Longoria will be back in 2019 and should be better but McCutchen was traded to the New York Yankees during the last trade deadline. Maybe the SF Giants rumors about the addition of another star player like Bryce Harper from the Washington Nationals who will become a free agent could be the solution that the team is waiting for?

Another area where the team will be looking to improve is the bullpen. A team never have enough good arms and depth in the bullpen and especially if the team want to play in the postseason. The bullpen of the Giants was not good enough in 2018 and adding more arms like free agent pitcher Justin Wilson who is currently with Chicago Cubs could help. Other potential names like Brad Brach, Joe Kelly, and Zach Britton could also be considered by the G-men.

No matter what decisions are made, this will be an important and defining SF Giants offseason. The team is playing in a very competitive and tough NL West division and several teams like the Dodgers and the Rockies will be good once again, and for years to come. The Giants will need to improve some urgent needs first but without trying to give long contracts that will hurt the team for a long period of time. Only time will tell what the new GM will do to move this team forward in 2018 and beyond…
