49’ers Would Love to Try and Keep Both Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard on Their Roster

The 49ers are expected to give “serious consideration” to keeping both Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard behind starting quarterback Jimmy Garappolo in 2019 according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

The 49ers may not want to give up on either player, especially with Garappolo coming back from an ACL tear, but the reality is very few teams can afford to keep more than two quarterbacks on their regular season roster.

If you check any top sportsbook, the Niners with all three quarterbacks have a much better chance at competing in the NFC West in 2019 than without.

Mullens and Beathard will likely compete throughout training camp for the right to back up Jimmy G. Mullens was the better player in 2018, but he hardly set the world ablaze after his stunning first start.

Beathard has the better draft pedigree. Mullins though had something special in 2018 that no one could deny. He came on late in the season and led the team to a thrilling Thursday night home win over the Oakland Raiders, and overall on the year he went 3-5 as a starter, throwing 13 touchdowns with 10 interceptions to go along with 2277 yards.

On the flip side, Beathard was 0-5 in 2018 as a starter, throwing eight touchdowns to go along with seven picks, but had a respectable QB rating of 81.8.

It’s going to be interesting to see what the Niners at the end of the day do, and if any other team is going to try and land one of the two quarterbacks as a possible addition to any roster around the league.

With free agency ready to start next week, just about anything can happen, so keep an eye on this ongoing situation in the Bay regarding the 49ers.
