Colts QB Andrew Luck to Retire; Tells Owner Jim Irsay He’s Mentally Worn Down

In a move that can only be defined as a stunner, Colts franchise quarterback and former first-overall draft choice Andrew Luck is reportedly retiring after seven seasons in the NFL.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Luck is going to officially announce his retirement from the league on Sunday.

The Colts QB, who will turn 30 in mid-September, has met with Colts owner Jim Irsay to tell him of the decision, according to the ESPN report.

Luck has had a tough offseason, dealing with what was described as a calf injury, and then there was a report that the calf injury had moved to being more of a high ankle sprain.

He was ruled out of the preseason, and there was question marks if he would be ready for the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Luck suffered a shoulder injury in Week 3 of the 2015 season, and has since it’s been tough for him to stay healthy.

He has missed 26 games, including the entire 2017 season, due to shoulder, kidney and rib injuries.

2018 was a great year for Luck, as he came back and led the team to the postseason as a wild card, winning a game in the wild card round in Houston against the Texans before losing to the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional round in Kansas City.

Last season he threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

With Luck walking away, a successful season for the Colts is very much in question. The depth chart at quarterback includes Jacoby Brissett, who likely will open the year at QB, and basically unknowns in Phillip Walker and Chad Kelly.
