Browns Earn First Win of 2019 in 23-3 Victory Over Jets; Three Takeaways

The Browns may be able to put the term ‘mission accomplished’ next to the schedule with a ‘W’ on Monday night in New Jersey against the New York Jets, but there’s still plenty to talk about both good and bad after 120 minutes of football so far in 2019.

If you were into online sports betting you likely took the Browns minus the 6.5 points on Monday night, but you had to sweat it out for a bit despite the Jets doing not one thing on offense in the first half.

Cleveland was somewhat lackluster, and while they built a solid 16-3 lead after 30 minutes, there was still a sense of uneasiness about their play on the field.

But in the NFL, a win is a win, and now the team can come back to the 216 and get ready for another prime-time game, this time against much stiffer competition in the NFC Champion St.Louis Rams on NBC’s Sunday Night football.

Here’s a couple quick takeaways from the Monday night victory.

1. Baker Still Shaky

The Browns first overall pick of a year ago, QB Baker Mayfield, made some great throws during Monday’s 20-point win, but also at times looked very unsettled and uncomfortable on multiple occasions throughout the game.

Baker on the night was 19 of 35 for 325 yards, including a long TD to Odell Beckham, and an interception. He was rushed in the pocket a number of times, and just didn’t look like he had the same swagger as he did plenty of times last season.

It remains to be seen if these early growing pains are really something to be worried about or not.

2. Garrett Dominates

Myles Garrett earned a pair of personal fouls, but that was about the only things he did wrong on the night at the Meadowlands.

He was simply awesome, bringing back memories of another linebacker who use to play at a stadium close to MetLife, that being former Giants linebacker and Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor.

Garret was that good, and in recording three sacks, three tackles for losses, and a total of five quarterback hits.

It was an effort that will likely earn him the ‘AFC Defensive Player of the Week’ award.

3. Beckham the Star of the Show

While Myles Garrett was playing lights out on defense with sacks and big hits, it was Odell Beckham Jr. who put the game away with a sweet 89-yard score.

The catch and run from Baker Mayfield came after the D held the Jets on fourth down, and quickly Baker hit Odell in stride, and a few seconds later he was gone and the Browns were up 23-3.

Fans have been waiting to see a big play in the first two games by Beckham, and in the stadium where he use to don the colors of the Giants, the all-world WR came through.
