Browns Look to Even Their Record Against the Jets: 3 Keys to a Win Tonight

After last week’s disaster at home against the Tennessee Titans, the Browns will look for their first win of the 2019 season tonight as they take on the beat up New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Most sports betting venues have the Browns as a healthy 6.5 road favorite, which is crazy thinking that they lost by 30 at home last week while the Jets lost at home to the Buffalo Bills by a point.

The reason for the line has more to do with injuries to the Jets than how the Browns did or didn’t play. The Jets will be minus defensive leader linebacker C.J. Mosley as well as starting quarterback Sam Darnold.

This is not to say that tonight will be easy, but if the Browns find a way not to win in the Meadowlands, it could be a long start to their season with tough games ahead.

Here’s a few quick keys to a win tonight for the Browns.

1. Better Discipline

It goes without saying that 18 penalties for 200 yards is a very quick way to lose a football game, but that’s what happened on Sunday against the Titans, something Browns fans hadn’t seen in some 60 years.

The focus this week has to be on being better with technique, that way the holds and what not won’t be called. As far as losing focus, that has to fall on a coaching staff that was severely outcoached on Sunday by the Titans.

The trend of penalties in the NFL is way up in two weeks thus far, the Browns have to just be better tonight when it comes to that.

2. Playmakers

The Browns biggest offensive playmakers were rather silent on Sunday, as Odell Beckham, Nick Chubb and Jarvis Landry all put up some okay numbers, but they were nowhere near good enough for a winning effort.

It will be on Baker Mayfield to not only create time in the pocket, but look for him to try and get a few big balls downfield to both Odell and Jarvis.

As for Chubb, the game got out of hand so the run game was a non-factor, but hopefully tonight he can have a lot more impact on the game.

3. Pressure Trevor

Trevor Siemian will get the call for the Jets tonight, and the Browns can’t sit back and think it will be a piece of cake to get to the former Broncos QB, so they have to make things happen up front.

”Just do my job,” Siemian said of his mindset entering tonight. ”Run a clean operation and get the ball in the end zone. It’s pretty simple.”

The 27-year-old was a 7th round pick of the Broncos back in the 2015 NFL Draft, and two years ago started 10 games for Denver, going 5-5 in those starts.

He’s thrown 30 touchdowns to 24 picks, and has a lifetime completion percentage of 59.3.

If the Browns can get to him and force some bad throws, that should be enough to get out of New Jersey tonight with a win.
