Frank Gore Remains the Bills Starting RB; But For How Long?

The Bills had a solid comeback opening day win over the New York Jets last Sunday, a lot of it thanks in part to the play of rookie running back Devin Singletary.

So when coach Sean McDermott made it clear Wednesday that Frank Gore was still the teams’ number one running back, the biggest question remains – for how long?

If you’re a basketball-betting.pro you know that you only have to study five guys in the lineup, but for the Bills, they are hoping that creating drama with the running back spot will make them even better, starting with Gore.

McDermott not only announced that Gore will remain the starter, but also that (again, for the moment) that T.J. Yeldon, who declared that he wanted the ball as the lead back this offseason, will be the number two running back after Gore.

The interesting thing about playing time in terms of being a Bills running back is last week in the 17-16 win at the Meadowlands is that Singletary topped Gore and Yeldon in playing time with 45 offensive snaps to a combined 21.

The media in Buffalo seemed to push McDermott when it came to naming a “feature back” and “No. 1 back,” and the coach didn’t seem to really care for the tone of what the media thought.

“Feature back, No. 1 back. How about just running back?” he said Wednesday.

“Does that work? Just running back. We’re just trying to win games. Whoever helps us win games, that’s who our feature back is, I guess.”

The Bills against the Jets last week as a whole rushed for 128 yards on 25 carries, putting up an impressive 5.1 yards per carry.

Singletary had the most impact on the ground with 70 yards on just four carries, showing again his ability to come up with the big play.

Josh Allen, who was the leading rusher for the Bills in the entire 2018 season out of the quarterback spot, was second on the team in the win with 38 yards on 10 carries.

Gore, who was the starter in the opener against the Jets, had a tough time getting going, as he rushed for just 20 yards on 11 carries, with a long of 9 yards.

The team will look to get him going earlier on Sunday when the Bills look to get to 2-0 against the 0-1 Giants.

“We’re just taking things one day at a time with this guy,” offensive coordinator Brian Daboll said of Singletary.

“He made a couple big plays for us; we’ve got a lot of confidence in him. We’re going to keep grinding him and getting him better. He’s got a lot of talent, but we think all of our backs do.”
