Grassroots Rugby to be hit by cuts (again)?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It’s a pretty outrageous state of affairs if reports are true that grassroots rugby will once again have to bear the brunt of cost-cutting measures being planned by the RFU.

According to the Guardian, which claims to have seen the leaked document in question, the governing body is planning to cut its workforce by 30% overall, to include shrinking its rugby development department – responsible for expanding and nurturing interest at grassroots level – from 234 to just 130.

This follows the massive cuts to community rugby, including the loss of around 50 jobs from the development department, in November 2018.

By my calculation that’s a reduction of around 54% in under two years.

The RFU do not seem to appreciate the crisis facing the community game.

With huge uncertainty surrounding when rugby might return below the elite level, many clubs are seriously struggling financially and then there is the not inconsiderable issue of trying to persuade players and parents that returning to training and playing in the midst of a global pandemic is a safe thing to do.

Frankly grassroots rugby needs all the help it can get right now and yet the RFU would appear to be (possibly willfully) blind to the long-term impact on participation that these cuts will almost certainly have.

I appreciate that, with revenues tight, the RFU does need to tighten its belt in places, but targeting the community game (again) is surely misguided, especially when senior RFU employees continue to be paid eye-watering amounts even when pay cuts are taken into account, and RFU Council members – the infamous 57 old farts – will  no doubt continue to enjoy the freebies and privileges associated with their position.

I have long held the view that grassroots rugby ought to be the RFU’s number one priority if rugby is to thrive in this country.

If these reports prove to be correct, however, the RFU clearly think otherwise.
