BaaBaas game called off

And so it seems the England v Barbarians game on Sunday at Twickenham has been called off.

The match had been in serious doubt following the breach of coronavirus protocols by a group of Barbarians players – including, astonishingly, such experienced campaigners as Chris Robshaw and Richard Wigglesworth - who left the team hotel in central London on Wednesday night to have dinner.

The final nail in the coffin, however, appears to have been the discovery of a second undisclosed breach that had taken place previous day in which a number of players had also left the hotel bubble without permission.

I completely appreciate that part and parcel of being part of a Barbarians squad is the opportunity to mix, socialise and have a few beers with fellow players.

But when you’ve agreed to abide by certain protocols and when the potential consequences of breaching such protocols, not only on this match but possibly on the entire autumn international series, are so obviously known – well, sorry, I just don’t get it.

I mean, I don’t want to rush to judgement but it’s difficult not to. What on earth were they thinking?

The BaaBaas, to their credit, did attempt to scramble together a “clean” match day 23 – which was to include a couple of Wales U20 players as well as players who would not have been required in the England match day squad – but the discovery of the second breach put paid to any such plans.

Those involved in the protocol breach will now probably never represent the BaaBaas again. I hope they enjoyed their dinner.
