News that relegated Saracens might earn promotion back into the 2021/22 Premiership without having to play a single game in the Championship – as reported by The Daily Mail (so it must be true) – has, predictably enough, brought out the Sarries haters in the bottom half of the internet.
“Unfair”, “immoral”, “disgrace” and “farce” are just some of the more polite words being bandied about.
For some it would mean that Saracens would have not been properly punished for their salary cap breaches – which would be a perfectly valid argument if it wasn’t for the fact that the club was fined a record amount and deducted 70 points to ensure relegation and thus ensure no Premiership rugby for a season and consequently no European rugby for two seasons.
The reason that Saracens might, in some peoples’ eyes, “escape justice” is that there is a real possibility, in the absence of a significant bailout, that the majority of Championship clubs will not want the coming 2020-21 season to go ahead if crowds are not to be allowed back into stadia. For such clubs it is far better economically to release players and save costs than proceed with games behind closed doors.
For Premiership Rugby, two seasons without a box office club like Saracens would, it appears, be too difficult to swallow in such financially straitened times so, if the reports are true, Saracens will be welcomed back in 2021-22 whatever happens.
For those who claim this is unjust, let’s be honest – there is no doubt whatsoever that, if the Championship were to go ahead, Saracens would be way too strong for the division and undoubtedly they would have been promoted anyway.
What is also absolutely clear is that, in these desperate times, desperate measures are called for. Radical solutions are required at the top end of the game if the professional club game is to survive – hence the rumour that, as well as Saracens being welcomed back, Ealing Trailfinders will also be allowed to buy themselves a seat at the top table.
Effectively it would be ring-fencing by a different name – with 14 viable (more or less) professional clubs in the Premiership, leaving the Championship as a semi-professional league.
So, whether the Championship is played in 2020-21 or not, the outcome does look somewhat inevitable, like it or not.
