Many key factor play into influencing the value of vintage baseball cards, such as age, card condition, and quantity produced. As baseball cards are being produced more commonly today, vintage cards from baseball’s cherished history are becoming more valuable. More commonly today, multiple sets and copies of cards are created regularly, dwindling the potential for future rare baseball cards. Most of the cards on this list, as well as most of the rarest cards to date, were produced during World War I or the time period immediately after World War II. During World War I, limited numbers of baseball cards were produced, leading to many of these cards being very valuable today. With these factors in mind, this list contains the most vintage baseball cards of all time and the potential value they could be sold at:

  1. 1909-1911 T206 Sweet Caporal Honus Wagner

The T206 Honus Wagner is hailed as the rarest baseball card ever and is noted as the symbol of trading card collecting. This card is the most desired and sought after card to collectors in history. The Honus Wagner cards were pulled early in production during WWI because they did not want to be involved with promoting tobacco use to children. Only 200 cards were ever made, and it is estimated that there are only between 50-75 still in existence. Honus Wagner cards even in poor condition can go for seven figures, while pristine cards can go for over $3 million.

2. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle

While many of these cards were printed, today they stand as one of Mickey Mantle’s rarest and most valuable cards. This is because when Topps first produced the cards, they had initial poor sales, and thousands of these cards were dumped into the Hudson River. Because of this, it is difficult for collectors to have complete sets of high grade Topps cards. Today normal condition cards can go for $500,000 while cards in mint condition are valued at well over $2 million.

3. 1916 Sporting News Babe Ruth Rookie Card

The 1919 rookie card captures young Babe Ruth pitching for the Boston Red Sox before his eventual trade to the rival New York Yankees. Known as one of the most difficult cards to find of all time, this card is often found with Ruth off-centered in the card photograph. Along with this, different advertisements or a blank sheet on the back of the card, leaving certain ones more desirable than others. This card, in near mint condition, is valued at well over $1 million.

4. 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Tobacco (Ty Cobb Back)

This set of T206 cards is highly notorious for its numerous brand advertisements on the card backs. Only 22 cards of a tobacco brand endorsed with a photo of Ty Cobb were ever created, making it one of the rarest cards of all time. Depending on the condition of the card, the can sell anywhere from $500,000 to over $1 million.

5. 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth

This “pre” rookie card of Babe Ruth captures him in minor league baseball as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. Only 10 of these cards have been known to exist, and can be found having either red or blue borders. Ruth played less than a year of the Orioles, as financial constraints forced them to sell Ruth’s contract to the Boston Red Sox. Cards that have been located have not been in very good condition, but still fetch a price of over $900,000

6. 1909-11 American Caramel Rookie Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson was banned from baseball during the prime of his career because of his alleged involvement in the Black Sox scandal during the 1919 World Series. Due to this, limited number of Joe Jackson cards were created in history and has been one of the most sought after cards ever. Jackson’s photo is one of the most unique in history as well, having a purple backdrop and his personal choice of leaning on his bat for the photo. Few cards have ever been sold, but the most recent card sold for $667,000 in near-mint condition.

7. 1910 T210 Old Mill Joe Jackson

The T210 Old Mill set contained numerous minor league players commonly overlooked. However, one of baseball legend Joe Jackson’s minor league card was in these sets, making it one of the most rare and high demand issues of card sets. Jackson is depicted as a member of the Cleveland Naps’ minor league team, the New Orleans Pelicans, where he dominated the minor league game. The cards most notable feature is the red colored border around it. Few cards have been sold ever, but are believed to hold a value of over $600,000.

8. 1909-11 T206 White Border Eddie Plank

Regarded as the second most desirable card in the T206 set, this is the only card for the Hall of Fame pitcher Eddie Plank. There is no clear answer as to the reason why, but the strongest theory suggests that the card suffered from a poor printing plate. Many cards printed with wrong alignment of the photo and text, with some so bad that only the photo made up the entire card. This resulted in many cards not passing quality control and being destroyed. The rarity of the card has a price amount to match, being worth nearly $850,000 in mint condition.

9. 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie Card

While Mantle is one of the most widely collected players in the hobby, he claims yet another rare vintage card during his rookie year. It is regarded as one of the most eye catching cards ever, with a wide shot of Mantle up to bat and blue skies behind him. Unfortunately, during the printing of this card many cards received print lines, wax stains, and poor centering, leading to very few ever being sold. For those who get their hand on this card can expect anywhere from $700,000 or more depending on the condition of the card.

10. 1909-11 T206 White Border Sherry Magie Error Card

Another T206 set card, this Sherry Magee card is not only one of the rarest in the set, but is also one of the most rare error cards of all time. The error is in the spelling of Magee’s last name, as the card has “Magie” underneath his card photo. This error was quickly caught after production and sale of these cards halted, leading to them being so rare today. Those fortunate enough to have one should expect to receive around $650,000 for the it depending on the condition of the card.
