Woe in Wales

Six high profile departures in recent weeks suggests all might not be well right now in the Welsh Rugby Union’s corridors of power.

The latest to leave is Wales defence coach Byron Hayward, who has this weekend paid the price for the team’s indifferent form of late and has been sacked.

He joins breakdown coach Sam Warburton who left his role a few weeks ago to pursue other interests, and Ryan Jones, the WRU’s Performance Director who quit last month without giving a reason.

Also joining the WRU mass exodus in recent weeks have been CEO Martyn Phillips, Chairman Gareth Davies and head of commercial and marketing, Craig Maxwell.

To lose one senior employee might be described as unfortunate, but six?

Head coach Wayne Pivac has admitted that the Wales set-up “looks a mess.”

No shit, Sherlock.

Remember, not very much more than a year ago Wales were officially ranked number one in the world following a 14 match unbeaten run under Warren Gatland.

Five defeats in six games under Pivac, however, sees them now eighth in the World Rugby rankings, leading pundit Ugo Monye to describe Wales as a “sinking ship.”

Unless things improve, further departures look likely.
