VAR in Sport: Further Evidence of the Machine Takeover

We’re all used to the idea that we are losing our civil liberties and personal freedom to the onslaught of digital technology. It looks like sport has become the next victim to fall before those all-powerful technologies. This is because everything from football in the US to soccer in England has gradually had its spirit broken by the unwanted intrusion of the video-assisted referee (VAR).

Like all state-sponsored methods of surveillance, VAR was introduced as being nothing more than a benign force that would help real human referees and umpires make more correct decisions about the sporting action.

This meant officials in a game of football should simply watch a replay of a play to see if there was anything from a case of pass interference to a holding. Or a referee in a game of soccer could get help from the video-assistant referee to see when they might have missed an offside decision or a handball. Such uses of VAR have also been applied to sports as far-ranging as cricket to rugby.

However it looks like the use of this surveillance technology has become all-too powerful and is ruining the true spirit of these sporting events. We’ve seen games of soccer in England virtually grinding to a halt as match officials spend endless minutes analyzing grainy clips of video in search for a player who may have strayed a couple of inches offside. Plus all football fans will know how the instant replay process has quickly drained all of the life of the sport.

Of course, many who are in thrall to these machine technologies will say that they help make more correct decisions which ultimately means that the athletes get rewarded for their skill. Plus many sports fans will say that technologies have even helped them find the best sports betting sites in this comparison in a way that was unthinkable just a couple of decades ago.

While technology undoubtedly has its uses, the way that it is ruining modern sport is the perfect example of how our reliance on machines has gotten out of hand. All of this wouldn’t be so bad if this video-assistant referees were actually capable of making the right decisions. The bad call in the New Orleans Saints Championship game a couple of years ago is a case in point, and no amount of technology would be able to overturn this mistake.

Plus it has to be said that the use of technologies in sport is hopeless at actually recognizing the intent of the players. It’s fairly easy for the tech to be used to see whether a soccer player edged ahead of a defender in an offside decision, but when each frame is slowed down to a ridiculous degree, you won’t be able to see how these sporting stars are really interacting.

It’s all a sorry state of affairs that shows how far sport has fallen in recent years. We have gradually gotten used to sight of our sporting stars being spoiled, pampered and overpaid celebrities. But now the main focus of these sports events isn’t even on the athletes. More time gets spent in analyzing whether the video assistant technologies were used to make the right decision rather than the human endeavors on the pitch.

All of which has shown how sports has become yet another human activity to fall under the spell of our digital overlords. Technology has affected everything from how we buy products and services to how we conduct our everyday relationships. For a while it looked like sport was one of the last places undisturbed by the relentless rise of digital technology. But now it seems that sport has become technology’s latest victim.
