Texans Releasing Longtime Star Defensive End J.J. Watt
In yet another move by the Texans sending shockwaves around the NFL, the team is reportedly set to release longtime popular defensive end J.J. Watt, this according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport.
The rumors of the team dumping Watt have been on the table for awhile, but it still comes as a surprise that the team would just flat out get rid of Watt.
The 31-year-old has spent the last 10 seasons with the Texans after being drafted by them back in the 2011 season with the 11th overall pick in the first round.
Watt was due to earn $17.5 million in 2021, which is last year of his deal with Houston, which means the Texans can clear the books of Watt as he has no guaranteed money remaining on the contract.
The Texans came into the 2021 offseason with $13.4 million over the cap, so adding this type of money will help a great deal as the team looks towards free agency next month.
The last few years have been tough for Watt in terms of health, and he’s played a combined 16 games in 2016, 2017, and 2019. He played out the full 2018 and 2020 seasons.
His best season as a pro came in 2012 with Houston when he amassed 20.5 sacks for Houston, leading the NFL.
He also put up 20.5 sacks in 2014, and in 2017 led the league again in sacks with 17.5.
