Beeb letting the side down

While the results in last weekend’s women’s Six Nations were predictably one-sided, with France and England (who also showed that they were on a par with the men by conceding 14 penalties) putting 50 points on Wales and Scotland respectively, it is still massively disappointing that the BBC has chosen not to show England’s match against Italy this weekend on a main channel.

Although the Beeb is showing live Rugby League Challenge Cup action on BBC1, on BBC2 it will instead be broadcasting an episode of “Flog It” that was first broadcast in 2014 and has reportedly already been shown six times – that is the regard in which women’s rugby is apparently held.

Yes, the England vs Italy match is available on iPlayer, but the Beeb is missing a trick here. Not only does the BBC have a duty as a national public broadcaster, for a number of years it has been losing live sports rights left, right and centre, meaning that it should regard having live rights to the women’s Six Nations as something of a privilege and an opportunity to partner the women’s game as it grows.

Instead it would appear that the BBC regards having the rights to the competition as a chore – almost as if it thinks that women should be grateful that their game is getting any coverage at all.

Frankly, the Beeb letting women’s rugby down and it’s about time more people said so.
