Amor pays the price

It appears that England attack coach Simon Amor is the one to pay the price for England’s dismal showing in this year’s Six Nations.

The RFU and Amor, who has been in the role for 15 months, have “mutually decided” to part company following a campaign in which England’s attack was, at best, sporadic – although Amor can hardly be expected to take responsibility for the team’s general apathy or, in particular,  its collective lack of discipline around the breakdown.
England’s skills coach, Australian Jason Ryles, is also stepping down from his role owing to the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic and, to be fair, he is absolved from any blame in the team’s recent travails on account of the fact that he has been stranded on the other side of the world.
This leaves Eddie Jones searching for two new coaches, the identity of which will go a long way to determining whether Jones can turn the team’s fortunes around before the 2023 World Cup.
Given that this is two years away there is still plenty of time, but only if this time is used wisely. The ‘A’ team game against Scotland and the tests against the USA and Canada this summer therefore take on far greater significance than we might normally have expected – not so much in terms of results, but in providing opportunities for previously ignored players to lay down a marker.
As to who is likely to join the coaching team, logistically it probably has to be someone locally based. Off the top of my head a shortlist featuring former Fiji sevens coach Ben Ryan, Exeter’s Ali Hepher, Northampton’s Sam Vesty, Quins’ Nick Evans and Sarries’ Kevin Sorrell wouldn’t be a bad start, although Jones has shown little inclination of late to recruit from English domestic rugby.
